God wants to talk to you!
Hebrews. 4:12 "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart"
Jeremiah 33:3 "Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known."
Proverbs 25.2 - God wants you to pursue him!
1 Corinthians 2-9-12 - We have direct access to God's thoughts through the Holy Spirit!
Ok great, but how do we actually do it?
- There are many different ways. God can use any of them, but some ways work better for different people. That's the beauty of all being different.
- Which of these ways have you heard God before? Which would you like to experience in the future?
Bible - God's spirit speaks through His Word, often highlighting passages or words
Memory - Holy Spirit often triggers a memory of an event, Scripture, etc. that brings light or direction
Circumstances - Situations or events that bring insight or clarty to a situation
Art - Images that bring God's presence, revelation, or message to you
Nature - Inner messages received when observing or immersing oneself in God's creation
Word of Wisdom - An instantaneous insight into a particular situation
Dreams - a picture or series of pictures while asleep
Word of Knowledge - A disclosure of truth implanted by God that you could not otherwise know
Visions - a picture or series of pictures seen while awake; viewed literally or transposed over waking life
Prophecy - a timely message or word given by another person that strengthens, encourages, or comforts an individual of the church body

Preaching & Teaching
People - Holy Spirit may speak direction, wisdom, and confirmation through godly people in your life
Audible Voice - God speaking in a way that is heard audibly by one or more persons
Encounter - An experience of God's phenomenal presence leaving an overwhelming message, strong impression, or personal transformation
Signs & Wonders - External supernatural and visible demonstrations of God's love and power
Emotions - God can speak through overwhelming emotions of compassion, sympathy, love, etc that exceed our own natural feelings about a person or situation, but reflect the heart of God
Inward Sensing - Also known as discernment
Journaling - God can use our reflective writing to bring insight, wisdom, and clarity from above
Popping Words - An internal, audible message through
Tongues & Interpretation - A spontaneous message a word or a phrase whispered by God from God in an unlearned language, where the revelation of the tongue may be given to another individual with the gift of interpretation
Popping Pictures - A quick picture or image flashed into our mind; similar to Imagination
- Learning to hear God can be like learning a new language
- It is okay to be wrong! Even people in the Bible had to practice, and sometimes they got it wrong at first too!
- Approach learning to hear God as you would learning any other skill
1 Samuel 3:1-12 - Samuel mistook the voice of God for the voice of a real person.
How do you know what you've heard is actually from God?
- Is it consistent with scripture? - Does it match what you know about God's character?
- Gut check (discernment) - learn this through practice
- Phone a friend - Find someone who you trust and ask them. Wisdom can be found in good counsel.
- Test it! - If it's actionable, try it out!
Hebrews 5:14 - "But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil."
1 John 4:1-3 - "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this, you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God."
1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 - "Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good."
